SR-71 Full Pressure Suit
Fying at the Edge of Space
Flying the SR-71 was different than flying most other aircraft. It could operate safely at a maximum speed of Mach 3.3 and an altitude more than sixteen miles, or 85,000 feet above the earth. Due to the extreme environments in which the SR-71 flew, the crew wore pressure suits similar to those used by astronauts. These suits prevented medical issues during flight, such as hypoxia (oxygen deficiency), decompression sickness (DCS), Ebullism (vaporization of body fluids), and exposure to thermal extremes.
A Suit Like No Other
The suit had six layers, including long underwear, comfort liner, ventilation layer, double-walled gas container, restraint layer, and exterior cover. Unlike the white suits worn by astronauts, the SR-71 flight suit included an integrated parachute harness, an automatic, water-activated floatation system, and was gold-oragne to aid in ocean rescue. The helmet was made up of fiberglass, metal, and a fine layer of gold, and enabled crew communication and pressure regulation.
